How You Think Matters
Somewhere in my past, the saying, “As a man thinks, so he is,” became firmly planted in my mind as Scripture. Attributing it to Solomon, I’ve always regarded it is as an uncontested truth. But I couldn’t find it in the updated translations.
Scripture does teach in Galatians 6:7, “As you sow, you reap;” and Proverbs 4:23 NLT, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”
Meaning, if you sow impure thoughts, eventually you will do impure actions. If you sow whatever is “true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, virtuous,” (Philippians 4:8), you will eventually act in an upright, godly manner, doing great things (Daniel 11:32).
Then I found the verse again, using the New King James translation. Solomon warned about the superficiality of a stingy person who pretends to be generous by sharing with you—all the while calculating how much it’s costing per bite! “Do not eat the bread of a miser, nor desire his delicacies; For AS HE THINKS IN HIS HEART, SO IS HE” (Proverbs 23:6-7 NKJV).
The one thing in life you control is what you choose to think about. So what’s best to think about?
The Bible says, “if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:1-2 NASB).
How you keep thinking matters. The seeds you plant in your self-talk take root and grow. If the seeds are the weeds of doubt, condemnation, the occult and abuse, you will harvest the terrible products of those thoughts.
If you don’t spend time in the Bible or to think about your position in Christ, a place of honor and authority, you may likely feel inadequate, a victim of circumstances, not valuable, someone who can’t or won’t amount to much—which is exactly OPPOSITE of how God thinks about you. But that’s how you’ll act; always complaining, never victorious or thankful.
Or, if you think yourself the master of your fate, that you’re sufficient in and of yourself for any task, lord of all about you, you may get far in this life, but you’ll die with nothing to take into eternity but your deflated conceit when facing the true Lord of All.
Your self-talk, that non-stop dialogue in your brain, matters. You are the product of your thoughts. Sanctify them! Meaning, take time to humbly sow biblical truth into your mind. Think less about how you can get ahead and more about what Jesus Christ has done for you and how you can encourage others to know him and be rightly related to God. The natural outcome is that you will grow and reap the peaceful harvest of an empowered life well-lived.
Today, guard your thoughts, fill them with Biblical truth, starting with the verses in this meditation.
