Do You Believe What Is Real?
What if what you see isn’t the whole story? When life feels overwhelming, do you ever stop to ask, “is this for real?”
We’re often swept along by responsibilities and pressures, rarely pausing to consider whether we’re pursuing what matters—or simply reacting to what demands our attention. God invites us to see as he sees beyond the surface, to understand that He is able to blow our minds with what is truly real and not superficial. For the next couple of minutes, consider the following:
When the angel Gabriel told the young virgin Mary that she would have a child conceived not by a man but by God, do you think she might have asked herself, “Is this for real?” (Luke 1:26-38)
When the wedding in Cana ran out of wine and Jesus turned normal water into fine, aged wine—the best for last—do you think those who knew asked, “Is this for real?” (John 2:1-10)
When during a terrible storm, the stressed-out disciples, fearing they were going to die, finally woke up Jesus, and he calmed the storm with a word, do you think they asked, “Is this for real?” (Mark 4:38-41)
When Jesus fed 5000 people by multiplying a couple pieces of dried fish and bread, do you think someone in the crowd asked, “Is this for real?” (Matthew 14:13-21)
Later, when Jesus appeared like a ghost, walking on the water, and invited Peter to join him, and when Peter did join him walking on the water, do you think Peter thought, “Is this real?” (Matthew 14:25-31)
When after witnessing Jesus being brutally tortured, nailed to a cross, a spear being driven through his heart, and being buried, he then physically appeared to his disciples from out of nowhere—suddenly he was among them, suddenly he was gone—do you think they asked themselves, “Is this for real?” (Matthew 28:16-17, John 20:19-20, Luke 24:15-31, 36-37)
What must have been going on in the hearts and minds of the 120 people gathered in the upper room after they witnessed the impossible: Jesus had ascended, levitated, into the sky until he was out of sight, and they obeyed the command to wait in prayer for the Holy Spirit to come upon them. Were they asking themselves, “Is this for real?” (Acts 1:6-13)
Dear Reader, are you troubled by what is happening in the world—or in your own life?
Beyond asking “Why is this happening?” have you wondered, “What is truly real? What is God doing?”
Jesus reminds us that there is more to life than what we see. “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me” (John 14:1). If God is sovereign, and if Jesus has shown that what we call “reality” is not the whole story, then certainly He is able to change both your circumstances and your heart.
Today, ask Jesus to meet your need and trust Him to show you what is real.
