The Danger of An Unprotected Heart

Who doesn’t enjoy a good fantasy? Whether it’s a thrilling spy movie, a murder mystery, or a superhero comic book, we all get caught up in stories that stretch our imagination. We’re drawn to stories where larger-than-life characters solve problems, make bold moves, and often defy reality. It’s in our nature to be captivated by such ideas, whether in movies, books, or even business strategies.

It’s one thing to enjoy a movie where a Norse god saves the day with his superhero friends. But it’s a real danger when someone believes that same Norse god can save their soul. We use many ideas—myths included—to form our worldviews, but when it comes to decisions that affect your eternal destination, the stakes are too high to rely on fantasy.

Myths, false gods, and occult practices may seem harmless, but they’re dangerous because they become engrained in us and often blur the lines between what is biblically true and what is dangerously anti-God.

Reality is blurred when what you fantasize and wish would be true becomes a quest to adopt anything that remotely promises to make you the master of your world. To justify your quest, you find teachers who promise tools that sound plausibly scientific or spiritual, who teach myth as biblical truth—or “truth the Bible won’t talk about!” Eventually, you defy God by believing you can control your world apart from Jesus Christ.

Yes, even Christians can blur Biblical truth with myths without realizing it.

The Bible warns to guard your heart, Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23 NIV). That means, you and I need to be intentionally protective of what we feed our minds. Parents, help your children understand the dangers of an unprotected heart!

What intentional steps can you take?

The Apostle Paul warned Pastor Timothy Command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm” (1 Timothy 1:1-7 NIV).

In our culture, it’s easy to get confused because we’re surrounded by stories and ideas not based on truth. And we don’t want anyone to tell us what to do!

Be wise. Quit feeding your mind with myths and speculations.

Make no mistake—Christianity is not a myth. The Apostle Peter made it clear: We did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty (2 Peter 1:16 NIV).

Today, examine your beliefs and protect your heart!
