Are You Missing What God Has Already Shown You?
They walked with Jesus and still missed Him—are you overlooking what God has already made clear?
On the road to Emmaus, two disciples walked away from Jerusalem—confused, discouraged, and trying to make sense of what had just happened.
Jesus had been crucified. Their hopes were gone. And even though they had heard reports that He was alive, they didn’t know what to believe.
Then Jesus Himself joined them—but they didn’t recognize Him. They talked with Him. Walked with Him. Explained their disappointment to Him.
And still—they didn’t see Him.
How is that possible? How can you be that close to Jesus—and miss Him?
Jesus gives the answer:
“O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” (Luke 24:25–26, ESV).
Their problem wasn’t lack of information. It was incomplete belief.
They knew what the prophecies in the Bible were—but chose only to accept the parts of the story that fit their narrative, what was comfortable for their limited belief.
They expected glory, political salvation—but rejected suffering and weakness.
They wanted a victorious Messiah—but didn’t understand the cross.
So even when Jesus stood right in front of them, they couldn’t see Him clearly. Death is final. Resurrection is a possibility but who can prove it?
And if we’re honest, we do the same.
We read Scripture—but filter it through our expectations.
We believe the promises we like—but struggle with the parts that challenge us.
We want God to work in certain ways—and miss Him, or think He’s absent, when He doesn’t.
The Good News is that Jesus understood them and cared enough to not leave them in that confusion.
“Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself”(Luke 24:27, ESV).
He walked them back through the truth—not new truth, but truth they had missed. And everything changes when they finally see Him.
“Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” (Luke 24:32, ESV).
The same is true for us.
Sometimes we don’t need more information—we need a fuller understanding of what God has already said. We need to stop filtering what we read in the Bible through our preferences and start letting it shape our expectations. Because when we misunderstand God’s Word, we will misunderstand God’s work.
But when we finally see the Word of God clearly—everything changes.
Today, don’t just read what you want to hear—ask God to help you believe all that He has said, even when it challenges you.
