Why Does Life Come in Seasons?

Life comes in seasons—joyful ones and painful ones. What if the hardest seasons are the ones pointing us toward eternity?

It’s March. In the Northern Hemisphere it’s one of the most fickle months of the year. As the old saying goes, “In like a lion, out like a lamb.” One day feels like spring, the next like winter again. Life can feel like that, too.

Life has seasons like that.

Most of us enjoy the seasons when everything seems to be going well—when our plans work out and life feels bright and hopeful. Those are the seasons when it feels as if everything we touch turns to gold.

But those seasons never last forever.

The Bible reminds us that change is part of life. Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “For everything there is a season.”It goes on to describe the wide range of experiences we all face: “a time to weep and a time to laugh… a time to mourn and a time to dance… a time for war and a time for peace.”

Every one of us can relate. Some seasons feel joyful and full of life. Others feel dark, confusing, and painful.

That raises an honest question: Why would a loving God allow seasons filled with death, mourning, conflict, and sorrow?

Ecclesiastes gives us a surprising clue. In verse 11 we read that God “has made everything beautiful in its time” and that “He has put eternity into man’s heart.”

The difficult seasons of life were never God’s original design. They entered the world when humanity chose independence from God (Genesis 3). Yet even now, God uses life’s contrasts—the bright seasons and the bitter ones—to awaken something deep within us. When life hurts or feels incomplete, we begin to ask an important question: Is there something more?

That question is not accidental.

God placed eternity in the human heart so that we would search for Him. And when we search, the Bible points us to the answer: Jesus Christ. He came so that we could know God and receive life—abundant and eternal—no matter what season we are experiencing.

Today, if the changing seasons of life have left you searching for something more, let that question lead you to Jesus. Trust Him.
