Before the Storm Overturns You
The night was dark and moonless, and heavy rain blurred the highway ahead. Beside me on Interstate 80 thundered a double-trailer semi. Gusting winds and slick pavement shoved the trailers toward my lane. At the next exit I left the freeway, relieved to be off the road for the night, and watched the tandem rig continue into the storm, swaying across the lanes.
The next morning, only five miles down the highway, I saw the result. The semi lay overturned in the wide grassy median. The crash had ripped open the trailers. Boxes were scattered across the grass.
The driver was gone. In a moment, his world was over. What went through his mind as the truck stopped responding to his steering—teetering, pitching, and rolling over? What did he say? Was he ready to meet eternity?
That scene has stayed with me. The trailers wobbled in the wind. One moment the driver was fighting rain and crosswinds. The next, everything was overturned.
Life can change that quickly. And it may come without time for last-minute prayers or hurried bargains with God.
The Bible reminds us that life can change “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye” (1 Corinthians 15:51–52 ESV). For those who belong to Christ, that moment brings resurrection and eternal life. But Scripture also warns that “the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, ‘There is peace and security,’ then sudden destruction will come upon them” (1 Thessalonians 5:2–3 ESV).
Wisdom urges you to decide now—today, this moment—whom you will trust. Will you cling to the wobbling promises of sin? Or will you recognize the storm and cry out in faith, “Jesus, save me”?
Ignoring the warning signs does not make them disappear. One day, every life will reach its appointed moment.
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13).
Today, humble yourself before God. Don’t wait for the storm to come. Call on Jesus while the road is still clear.
