Live On Purpose
Is there such a thing as destiny? Do you and I have a specific, predetermined role to fill that will find us? It sounds inspiring. Lately, I’ve heard the idea repeated in movies and social media, for example, “great men don’t seek positions of leadership, the position seeks them.”
Actually, people achieve a purpose, meaning they purpose to achieve. Destiny, like leadership, is something planned and intentional. Consider what you’re reading now: it wasn’t written by destiny; I intentionally wrote it on digital paper. My act is purposeful, according to a plan.
A victor can claim destiny, and who will argue? But too frequently, someone fails to accomplish anything significant simply because they didn’t make a plan to achieve anything, or didn’t have a worthy goal so they gave up.
The Bible instructs, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9 ESV). Think of it: You and I can participate with God! God allows a righteous person to accomplish a worthy goal and an evil person to achieve an evil goal. But God has the final word. Eventually evil will be vanquished, but the worthy plan will remain. Both the evil and the good person can live for a purpose but God will establish the purpose of the one who trusts him and works to achieve a worthy goal.
God gives each person the opportunity to accomplish significance in this life, mostly through many small ways witnessed by few. The secret is to be prayerfully intentional in making something worthy happen. Jesus didn’t command his disciples to continually wait, he more frequently commanded, “Come, follow me!” When we intentionally follow Jesus, we learn what is worthy and what matters.
What sort of plans are worthy? Things that reflect the character, creativity and intellect of God, that benefit those around us. See Ephesians 2:10; Jeremiah 29:7.
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” Proverb 16:3. So, what will I do with my life today— what will you do with yours?
Today, pray and set a worthy life goal, make a plan to achieve that goal, then find collaborators who will help you achieve your goal. Be accountable, focused and determined. If it’s a worthy goal, you will be motivated by many reasons to achieve it. Trust your future to God and purposely live a meaningful life!
