The Power of Little Things
Have you ever walked into your house and scrunched your nose? Something is causing it to stink! It happened to me. I looked all over the house for the source of the smell and eventually discovered in a closet, under a forgotten cabinet, there was a pile of mouse poo! After vacuuming it up, the smell was gone—and soon after calling the exterminators, the mice were, too!
It was just a little thing, but it caused great discomfort.
The Bible speaks about the power of little things in Ecclesiastes 10:1 NLT: “As dead flies cause even a bottle of perfume to stink, so a little foolishness spoils great wisdom and honor.” A fly is such a little thing and usually he doesn’t cause a stink—but left unattended in the wrong place, it fouls up not just the air but everything around it.
Dr. David Jeremiah got me thinking about passages in the Bible that talk about the power of little things:
“A little yeast” is used to warn us from casually tolerating teaching that contradicts the Bible because we soon accept it as truth, as in Galatians 5:9 NLT: “false teaching is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough!”
“A little yeast” is also used to illustrate how tolerating immorality can spread through the Church and cause many people to become infected, as in 1 Corinthians 5:6 NLT: “Your boasting about this is terrible. Don’t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough?” How often have you heard—or maybe even boasted—that “ogling” a pretty woman is ok; it’s only window shopping and doesn’t lead to anything. Yet the divorce rate in the Church and the number of fallen leaders due to adultery says otherwise: a little look can be very destructive!Consider the troubled life of David and his family after his affair with Bathsheba. It started with one innocent look!
“A little spark” is used in James 3:5-6 NLT to warn against the danger of a careless word, “But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.”
Little things make a difference and can change your life forever.
Take a moment to list the little things you’re dismissing as harmless. Confess them to God and change what you tolerate.
Change comes by cultivating your little faith. Jesus promised, “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” (Matthew 17:20 NLT).
Today, don’t disregard the little things—they have the power to make or ruin your life!
