A Life Worth Living

At the beginning of each year, as with the beginning of a project, I find it productive to consider what really matters—the kind of answers that address fundamental questions, such as:

“Am I living in a way that’s worth investing in or imitating?” And, “Who am I imitating or following?”

As the old adage says, “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” You become like those you spend time with and you generally spend most of your time with people who  share your outlook on life and do, act, and say the things you most enjoy. Yet, judging by the rates of addiction and suicide, a large number of people are not happy with their choices. They may not know how to change their value proposition.

What’s in your future?  Is it time to reconsider what’s at stake so that who you are and how you live are worth investing in and imitating?

Jesus spent his ministry years connecting with people and giving them reasons to follow him. The reasons are profound. The Gospel of John records some of the many reasons you and I should follow Jesus Christ:

* To those who long for security and something better, he said, “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:9-10 ESV).

* To those who mourn, who despair, who yearn for meaning and life, he promised, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die” (John 11:25-26).

* To those who want to know God, he directed, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14.6).

Why choose Jesus? Peter answered, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:68-69).

Today, if you want a life worth living, spend time with Jesus. How? One good way is to read the Gospel of John and believe what it says. Jesus Christ, alone, provides you the means for a life worth living: an abundant, secure, meaningful, and eternal life. Jesus will guide you to answer life’s fundamental questions.
