The Antidote To Cynicism Is The Cross

By Doug Isaacson

Cynicism is a cracked lens on the heart. It distorts what you see, turning generosity into strategy and kindness into manipulation. It’s the shrug, the raised eyebrow, the “Yeah, right,” that meets every hopeful word. Over time, the distortion becomes normal, and you forget what clarity looks like. Like a virus, cynicism spreads until it defines how you see everything.

Is cynicism distorting the way you see others today?

It’s very likely.

That’s why the warning in Proverbs is so urgent: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23). A cynical heart doesn’t just change how we think— it begins to shape our thoughts, our words, and ultimately it reshapes how we live.

My son, Pastor Luke Isaacson, gave a talk to chaplains who minister outside the church assisting first responders, hospitals, prisons and wherever needed. He shared his notes with me and I found them very helpful to my situation. After all, every follower of Jesus is called to minister in whatever vocation we’re in, but we need to be in alignment with God’s kingdom. An important alignment is the status of our heart.

Because cynicism attacks your motivation and adversely affects your spiritual alignment, you must actively, intentionally “guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

A wise missionary named Amy Carmichael likened the heart to a container.  She said, “When you bump a container, what comes out is what is already in.” If you have a cup of water, what will come out?  Water.

Why does cynicism grow? Because the hearts of Jesus’s followers are out of alignment with God’s kingdom and grace. Luke commented, “Sometimes church can be the worst place to find grace.  The lack of Christian charity is shocking.  The “above all else” really matters!

“One of the things we need to watch out for is cynicism. Cynicism kills hope, faith, love and is the quickest way to get hearts out of alignment.”

Luke continued, “In my 13 years of ministry – which is probably not a ton compared to some of you – I’ve wrestled with it – I’ve seen ministers not deal with it and watch what happens.

“Often, it’s bitterness, weariness, and the grind that make ministry too hard and if we’re not careful cynicism can come in and like a sponge take away the love, life, hope we have for the people we’re serving.

“Above all else let’s keep our hearts in alignment with Jesus. The antidote to cynicism is the cross.

–       Jesus laid down his life

–       Jesus loved his enemies

–       Jesus persevered

–       Jesus dealt with disciples who at times were just ridiculous.”

In the end, cynicism isn’t just a mindset—it’s a misaligned heart. And what fills the heart will inevitably flow into every part of our lives.

Today, remember the same love, grace and power that called you is the same one that will free you from cynicism.
