Being Humble Is Not Being a Wimp!

Have you ever longed to know the secrets of life, what it all means, what it’s all about, where you fit in the great master plan?  Yes! But to whom are such mysteries revealed? What kind of a person gets to learn such things? Is it only the rich who can know, or the mystic, or the monk?

Here’s what the Bible says, “The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray. He leads the humble in doing right, teaching them his way.” (Psalm 25:8-9 NLT).

You can know the secrets of life by opening your Bible: God instructs the humble in the mysteries of life!

There’s a catch – you have to be humble—but what does that even mean?

Is being humble the same as being poor, or simplistic, or timid, or not extravagant? Is it someone who always gets beat up or can never catch a break in life?

These are what we often associate with humility. Definitely not attractive! But if God says humility is a good thing, it’s got to mean more than what we think of it today. It must have meant more to the Biblical writers than what it often means to us. After all, God’s people in the Bible are not all helpless wimps who cower with lowered eyes and who shuffle about afraid of everything, are they?  Who can be attracted to such an image or lifestyle? Not me!

Let me share good news: The Biblical role model for being humble was Moses. Moses was no wimp, but he learned to be humble by being broken. He became a courageous, mighty man by learning to trust and obey God.

After killing a man, Moses felt like a failure and retreated far away from the grand lifestyle he was used to. Years went by while he lived as a lowly shepherd. Only when Moses was ready to listen to God was he able to deliver an enslaved people from the mightiest nation on earth; to perform miracles with a staff; to part the Red Sea; to receive the Ten Commandments from God; to shape twelve tribes into a Nation and bring them to the Promised Land after forty years of wilderness wandering.

Even when his leadership was challenged, the Bible says, “Moses was very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth” (Numbers 12:3 NASB).

Moses was no cowering wimp! His humility was defined by his obedient trust in God, he didn’t rely on himself. He did things God’s way even when it would be easier to do otherwise.

God is good and upright. He will teach his ways to those who recognize their weakness, their brokenness, and will listen to his voice. God makes himself known in the Bible.

Today, to learn the mysteries of life, be humble: courageously listen to, believe, and obey God’s Word.
