Walk In Refreshing Light
What’s refreshing about January, especially the further North you live, is that the light is returning. After the Winter Solstice, December 21, the days begin to grow longer and just that small addition of light to the day is energizing!
The Apostle John loved to describe God as light. I like that description. Just as there’s something energizing about walking in the light of the sun, so, too, walking in obedience to God is energizing!
“God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:5-7 ESV).
Unlike the light of the sun, which can be obscured by clouds, covering, and the earth’s rotation, causing its light to be hidden in shades of darkness, there’s no darkness in God. So, if we say we believe in God but don’t reflect his light because we prefer to do things that are in darkness, that are hidden from the light or are contrary to Scripture, we’re lying to ourselves!
One of the most refreshing feelings in life is to get sparkling clean after getting filthy dirty. Similarly, the same refreshing feeling washes over your emotions and your spirit when you’ve been forgiven for something you know was wrong. You feel purified. If you want that feeling to be normal, the Bible says, you can be truly purified only when you’re walking in God’s light through Jesus Christ.
A song from my childhood describes it well, “What can wash away my sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!” Why do Christians talk so much about the blood of Jesus? What’s so important about the blood?
God told Moses, “The life of the body is in its blood. I have given you the blood on the altar to purify you, making you right with the Lord. It is the blood, given in exchange for a life, that makes purification possible”(Leviticus 17:11 NLT). Jesus Christ is the final sacrifice that will ever be needed. The sacrifices required in Jewish law were pointing to Jesus. Only His blood will cleanse you and I from our sins. Only the blood of Jesus Christ gives us fellowship with God, unity with each other, and allows us to walk in God’s light.
Today, come out of the darkness; walk in God’s light through Jesus Christ. Be purified, feel clean and energized! It’s truly refreshing!
