Who Gave You Your Gifts?
Your abilities aren’t an accident. God gifts people uniquely to serve others, reflect His character, and glorify Him.
Have you ever wondered why people have such different abilities?
One person can compose beautiful music. Another can design bridges, build homes, solve complex equations, or create artwork that leaves us speechless. Some people are gifted organizers. Others excel at teaching, encouraging, repairing, leading, inventing, or investing.
The Bible says these differences are not accidental.
When God created humanity, He did something unique:
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…’” (Genesis 1:26)
Unlike the rest of creation, human beings were made in God’s image. We possess a unique capacity to reason, create, learn, solve problems, and transform ideas into reality. We were designed to reflect the creativity of our Creator.
For Christians, God goes even further. The Holy Spirit equips believers with gifts intended to benefit others. As Romans 12:4-6 teaches, our gifts “differ according to the grace given to us,” and 1 Corinthians 12:7 reminds us that these gifts are given “for the common good.”
One of the most surprising examples of this appears in the construction of the Tabernacle.
God could have instructed Moses to build a simple tent. Instead, He specifically called a craftsman by name:
“I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship…” (Exodus 31:3)
The man’s name was Bezalel.
Notice what God valued. He didn’t merely give Bezalel enough skill to make the Tabernacle functional. He empowered him to create something beautiful. The God who created sunsets, mountains, and flowers also values excellence, artistry, and craftsmanship.
The same principle appears throughout Scripture. God delights in people using their abilities well. Whether your gifts are artistic or technical, organizational or relational, visible or unseen, Scripture instructs us to work wholeheartedly, “as for the Lord and not for men… You are serving the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:23-24).
Excellence is not a human invention. It originates in the character of God.
Today, thank God for the abilities He has entrusted to you. Then use them to serve others, solve a problem, create something useful, or simply make something beautiful that reflects the creativity of the One whose image you bear.
