Will You Keep Your Chains—or Return to God?
Bad habits can become spiritual chains. Jesus invites you to return to Him and find true freedom.
How many times have you said, “I can stop anytime,” but “anytime” never comes? What began as a simple choice has become a habit, and that habit has become a chain.
You’ve tried self-help books, searched online for answers, and listened to advice from friends, but nothing seems to work. Now, you’ve almost resigned yourself to the habit, even though you know it may cost you something precious.
The fact that you’re reading this means you haven’t completely given up.
The problem isn’t merely the habit. The habit has become a master. What began as a choice has become a chain. If you truly want to be free, you must surrender yourself—body, mind, and heart—to God.
So, what will you do? Will you continue feeding the habit—or return to God?
The prophet Hosea wrote, “Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God. For the spirit of prostitution is in their heart; they do not acknowledge the LORD” (Hosea 5:4, NIV).
The phrase, “Their deeds do not permit them,” describes people whose repeated choices had become habits, and whose habits had become chains. Their sin had such a grip on their hearts that returning to God seemed impossible.
The people of Israel wanted the blessings of God without the authority of God. They wanted to be like the nations around them rather than remain faithful to the Lord. They pursued pleasure instead of obedience, forgot the God who rescued them, and ignored His commands.
For a time, life seemed easier. But eventually the nation unraveled. Hosea described the land as having “no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God.” Life became defined by “cursing, lying, murder, stealing and adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed” (Hosea 4:1-2, NIV).
The only solution for them—and for us—is to return to the Lord, know Him, and walk in obedience (Hosea 6:1-6). Yet Scripture is clear: we cannot free ourselves through willpower alone. We need God’s help (Romans 3:23; 6:23).
And God will help us, God will help you, if you come to Him.
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30, NIV).
Today, come to Jesus. Humble yourself before Him, obey Him, and walk with Him day by day. Freedom may not come all at once, but as you trust Him, He will transform your heart, break sinful patterns, and teach you a new way to live. The chains that once controlled you do not have the final word—Jesus does.
