The Quiet Cure for Anxiety

We try everything to cure anxiety—fitness, work changes, distractions—but God says the real cure is quiet trust in Him.

Do you experience anxiety? Everything may be going well, yet you feel like the hammer is about to drop. Or you feel an overwhelming need to hit RESET. Maybe there are so many things to do that you can’t concentrate on anything. Or something feels unresolved, but you can’t even put your finger on it.

“Aaargghh!” you might growl. “All these questions are stressing me out!”

Sorry. But the question remains: why are we so stressed out? Anxiety leads to serious consequences—depression, addiction, even suicide. Yet despite all our efforts to fix it, the problem keeps growing.

Consider the changes around us. Today nearly a quarter of American workdays are remote or hybrid, and many people have reshaped their lives searching for balance. Americans spend over $40 billion each year on fitness and wellness, trying to feel better physically and mentally. Job turnover remains high after the “Great Resignation,” when nearly 50 million Americans quit their jobs in a single year. Yet another trend quietly continues: fewer than half of Americans now belong to a church or synagogue, the first time in our nation’s history. Is there a connection?

Even believers struggle with anxiety. But Scripture diagnosed this problem long ago.

Anxiety is like a thief that comes to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10). Instead of turning toward God, we often run from Him, searching for relief in anything—entertainment, distractions, endless activity—that promises peace but never delivers it. More than 2,500 years ago the prophet Isaiah delivered a message that still speaks directly to our restless lives:

“…The Sovereign LORD…says: ‘In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it’” (Isaiah 30:15 NIV).

That phrase is striking, “but you would have none of it.”

Our world is louder, busier, and more crowded than ever. Between work, responsibilities, family demands, and constant digital noise, quiet time with God can feel like a luxury—but it’s actually the anchor that keeps everything else from drifting.

Are your prayers quick—if they exist at all? Is Bible reading a hurried task, if you open it at all? Do you pause to reflect on what God says about life, about sin and righteousness, about your heart? Or do endless notifications, news feeds, and entertainment fill every quiet moment?

Little wonder anxiety defeats us. When we stop trusting God, we try to carry life on our own—and it becomes too heavy.

Today, begin a new routine of quiet time with God. Slow down as you read the Bible. Reflect on what you read. Listen for the Holy Spirit. Pray—and ask Him your questions. As trust grows, you’ll discover something remarkable: the confidence of knowing God is in control, and the peace that pushes worry and anxiety aside.
