What Makes A Person Truly Great?

Jesus redefines greatness. True leaders don’t seek status—they serve others and trust God with the results.

Have you ever wished you were the one calling the shots?

Many leaders would have others believe they control outcomes—that everything good happens because of them and everything bad happens because of the poor leadership of others.

This phenomenon isn’t restricted to national politics, it happens everywhere around you. Maybe you’ve been caught up in the delusion—certainly some of Jesus’ disciples were.

In Mark 10:35–45, James and John asked Jesus for the places of highest honor in His coming kingdom. Instead of granting their request, Jesus exposed what they really wanted—position without understanding the cost. 

Then He gave one of His clearest lessons on leadership: “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant… For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

The lesson Jesus taught about being a leader shatters traditional thinking. While many leaders think the reward is control and acclaim, true leaders prioritize the needs of the people they lead. The difference is serving rather than dominating. 

Too often, we’re tempted to think, “If only I was the boss,” thinking that reward and fulfillment come from control. Jesus teaches that lasting significance doesn’t come through control. It comes through trusting God and serving others.

When I remember that God alone is sovereign, I no longer have to control every outcome. I can lead faithfully, serve humbly, and trust Him with the results. Instead of fighting for my own agenda, I’m free to seek His kingdom and care for the people He has placed in my life.

Today, surrender your need to control the outcome. Serve faithfully, love people well, and trust God with the results. That’s the kind of greatness Jesus honors.
