Every Temptation Has an Exit

Temptation buzzes around us like mosquitos—but God always provides a way out.

Evil desires are like mosquitos in Alaska’s vast wilderness—they’re everywhere! Anyone who has been in Alaska during mosquito season knows you can’t fight them by waving your arms. The only real solution is protection.

Temptation works much the same way. It often begins as pesky cravings for something we know God would not participate in. The thoughts keeps buzzing around our minds until we start making excuses for them—and eventually give in. Human effort alone is not enough. God provides protection and an escape.

The older I get, the more I realize life is a spiritual battle with unseen yet powerful forces. And in my own strength, I’m about as effective against them as someone standing in the woods yelling at mosquitos to leave.

I know what the Bible says. I know I should think differently. Yet too often, instead of calling on Jesus, I try to fight the battle on my own—and I keep losing.

But Scripture tells us something remarkable: the disciple of Jesus has already been given everything needed to defeat evil desires and live in partnership with God. The key is learning to claim God’s promises.

2 Peter 1:3–4 (NIV) promises, His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Did you catch that? Everything you need for a godly life has already been provided!

Another great promise explains how it works: “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV).

The battle against temptation has already been decided through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. His divine power gives us a way to escape the corruption that evil desires bring.

Every temptation has an exit.

For every temptation you face, God will provide a way out!

Our part is simple: turn to God and trust His promises in the moment of struggle. A good way to escape both mosquitos – and temptation – is sometimes to turn tail and run!

Today, when a persistent desire begins buzzing around your mind, stop trying to fight it alone. Turn to Jesus, claim one of God’s great and precious promises, and take the way of escape He provides.
