How tightly we cling to life! What would you do today, right now, if you knew that in 24 hours you’d be dead? The mind spins! So much to do, how would you prioritize them—or would you be paralyzed by fear? John chapters 13-16 tell what Jesus prioritized: he comforted his loved ones, gave them instructions to carry on, and made them secure promises.
Unlike you and me, Jesus was able to promise that he would prepare an eternal place for those who put their trust in him as God. He promised, “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am” (John 14:1-3 NLT).
Take comfort, then, dear Reader, if you believe that Jesus died and rose again then be confident he will return and take you to live with him in an eternal home free of pain, disease, famine, and war, that cannot be corrupted or diminished in any way!
Yet too often, we cling to this life as if this is all there is. Many people go to great cost to extend their lives beyond practicality. Maybe they think their loved ones will be comforted to have them here—even if “here” is a sterile hospital room where they’re unconsciously wasting away on life support; maybe it’s because they’re terrified of what awaits them after they die.
But you: trust Jesus and don’t fear! Clinging to this life is as unreasonable as a baby refusing to leave the womb. Life doesn’t end with death—it becomes more than we ever imagined! Believer, consider this, “Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand…For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory” (Colossians 3:1-4).
When you trust Jesus, you have already died to this world—you have a NEW LIFE that far surpasses both the achievements and pains of this life. If you cling to this life you deny the realities of heaven and the power of Christ. Being IN CHRIST, your life now exists where he is and your heart beats with divine realities.
Then, are you to retreat from life and refuse medical advancements? Usereasonable medical help but trust in God anduse your time on earth to prepare yourself and others for “the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.”
Today, listen to Jesus and don’t be anxiously troubled.
