“Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” John 2:2-5 ESV
Why did Jesus go to a wedding immediately after his baptism and victorious 40-day wilderness testing? A wedding could last for days but with common people usually didn’t signify a world-changing event; it wasn’t on par, for example, with tackling the Roman Government head-on. What was it about a wedding? Was he simply blessing a “union made in heaven”? Was he just endorsing the celebration as a community a union as old as Adam and Eve? Why would he cause his first sign, his first public miracle to be something as trivial as turning water into fantastic wine? Who really noticed? Why does God do things differently than the strategists and great men of this world? The answer is simple and profound. Jesus comes to us in our meager celebrations, in our mundane but best efforts, and there, in his presence, he trades out our hopelessness for his purpose, our monotony for his vision, our tiredness for activity that matters. But you must do whatever he tells you! “Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” John 2:2-5 ESV
. . . “Jesus trades our hopelessness for his purpose, our monotony for his vision, our tiredness for activity that matters.”
