“Mary…sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said…[Jesus said,] ’few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’” Luke 10:39, 42 NIV
Listening is a skill most of us have to learn; after all, we have so much to say! We’re often so eager for someone to listen to us that we forget to be a person who listens to others. Why is listening so important? My friend, Emilee, recently explained, “Listening is loving.” When we love someone, we put their needs, their thoughts, their desires ahead of our own. We listen to them. If you truly love someone, you won’t be preoccupied around them, you’ll take time to listen. If you’re not listening, it’s time to get your priorities back in order—or do you justify your lack of listening with excuses that you’re so busy, God, or spouse, or family, or friends will understand? Stop! Listen to the lives around you! Start by listening to God. Quit doing all the talking. Open God’s Word, the Bible, and listen to him. You’ll find you’ve chosen the better thing. “Mary…sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said…[Jesus said,] ’few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’” Luke 10:39, 42 NIV
. . . “Listening is loving.”
